When I was younger and my dad would ask what I wanted to be when I grew up I always said “happy” and he would always retort with ” you don’t understand how things work, you’re still too young”. But, but he didn’t realize was that it didn’t matter what I wanted to be anyway because be the time I “old enough to understand” and old enough for college I would have to work more hours than were in a day to pay for an unsatisfactory education or be put into debt for the rest of my life. What he didn’t understand was that I would be lucky to be happy when I grew up. What he didn’t understand was that being happy is the new american dream, because the old one was a sham.
